Student Unions decry Doug Ford’s promise to eliminate “Crazy Marxist Nonsense” on Ontario campuses

The Canadian Politician (Toronto) – Students unions across Ontario are up in arms with Premier Doug Ford and his government for making students fees optional for Ontario students in colleges and universities. Hitherto, students have had to pay mandatory fees some of which do not benefit them or they simply do not take advantage of. In an email to his party members to fund his government’s efforts, the premier stated that his government is making students fees optional to fix what he called the “crazy Marxist nonsense student unions get up to.” With this optional fees structure for millions of students in the province, it is expected that student unions would have to shut down some of the programs that assist students in their post-secondary experience. There will be expected job losses as well.

The premier noted that he had given students this option to eliminate some political ideas on campuses. “I think we all know what kind of crazy Marxist nonsense student unions get up to. So, we fixed that. Student union fees are now opt-in,” the premier said in his email to Conservative Party donors. Part of the motivation for this move according to party sources is the need for “greater transparency and choice to students when making financial decisions about their post-secondary education.” This change is coming on the heels of a recent order by the province for a 10% reduction in domestic students’ tuition, a reduction that has taken post-secondary institutions by surprise, leaving them grappling for ways to fill the unexpected shortfall.
